Fishing for striped bass has been very good locally this week and expecting the shore fishing to ramp up over the weekend with rough conditions. If you have the right gear fishing in these conditions can sometimes be favorable less people more fish. With fish ranging from schoolie sized to 40-pound mark, you never know if your next bite is going to be the big one. Best bites are still coming from around the breachways on an outgoing tide. Other than that local boulder fields and areas in the backwater have been producing quality fish. Larger fish can often be had a night, but the daytime fishing has been consistent.
There were some reports of Albies and Blues out front this week even at times come in tight enough to the beaches to get in casting range. Most of the Albies have been from Quonnie to Napatree point. There have been schools of bass and Albies chasing bait along with large pods of mackerel. Out front this week the Tog reports were decent with fish up to 10 lb's. Bycatch still includes seabass, fluke, scup, and striped bass.
The temperature spiked the past three days and warmed the salt ponds back up. This caused the bass fishing in the ponds to slow down a bit. However the bait have loved it and continue to get bigger. We should now start seeing a steady drop in both air and water temp. As this happens bait will eventually start to spill out of the salt ponds along the south shore as well as back in the bay.
The tuna bite went off this week with a lot of bluefin being landed. Ocean conditions were as good as they get and a lot of boats were able to get out. Most of the bites coming from the jig and chunk.
