Fishing Report May 12th, Summertime Feels

There's been a warm breeze pushing into southern Rhode Island, has me dreaming of the different fish to target and in a variety of ways. Striped bass fishing picked up about mid week with plenty of bluefish mixed in, some of these fish being Gators. Bass are still coming and going and feeding heavy when the bait is present. There has been a lot of rain bait in the water. Shad, Bass, and Bluefish have been taking advantage of that. This presents a great opportunity for fly fisherman and anglers throwing bigger plugs matching the smaller shad. Tautog fishing is producing good catches coming from rocky areas 20- to 30-feet of water and shallower. Most females are filled with eggs. It is not a regulation but is a great practice to release large egg carrying females this time of year.

Squid fishing has just kicked into gear but isn't red hot just yet. Expecting it to really shape up for next week. Fluke reports are trickling in with a few anglers catching them on squid jigs and a few decent sized one being caught at the Island. The worm hatch has been a slow start but expecting it to explode one of these nights. I always use mothers day as my point of reference for when they really start to boil.
