The air's turning crisp, the water's cooling, and the bite is still strong for those putting in the time. The big surf earlier in the week stirred things up, leaving the water dirty for a few days, but conditions have settled. There's still a little color in the wash, yet it's plenty fishable—and weeds haven't been much of an issue. Friday and Saturday both look great for getting out before things pick up again Sunday into early next week.
The shore bite has been fair, with a few small pods of bait and birds popping up throughout the day. If you put in the hours, you can pick off a few fish when those brief feeds happen—mostly stripers with the occasional blue mixed in. The action doesn't last long, so staying mobile and ready to move is key.
Inside the breachways and channels, the bite has been excellent. A solid class of lean fish in the 20-pound range came through this week. Not many small ones and not many giants—just quality fish. Bucktails and swimbaits have been effective inside, while swimming plugs like Stack Quigley Metal Lip Dannys and the JoeBaggs Swarter have been producing off the point and back in the channels, especially after dark.

A healthy 20 lb class striped bass caught in the Breachway — prime mid-October fishing!
Small blues continue to hang in the back of the ponds, feeding on small bunker. A few large fish reported this week, enough action to keep things interesting. Single hook Breachway Bomber and Kastmaster's are good choices here.
False albacore have been scarce. A few fish were seen jumping out front, but the shore bite has been quiet. It's likely the end of the run, though a brief late push isn't impossible. Hogy Epoxy Jigs will get the job done.
Tog fishing has been great, with bigger fish showing up as the water cools. The bite's been strongest when the tide is moving, and with dropping temps, bait stealers are starting to thin out. Focus on smaller, overlooked structure just off the main reefs—you might be surprised what's holding there.
