Its Friday and its that time of year again, lets get this cold past us and welcome this years fishing season. We are excited to be back in action, and can't wait for our fish friends to come back to town. The shop is all stocked up for the year and we will be open 7 days a week starting today. Opening day for trout in RI is tomorrow 4/12, we will be open at 6 a.m. The state did a great job stocking local ponds see the attached link for more information https://dem.ri.gov/natural-resources-bureau/fish-wildlife/freshwater-fishing/trout-stocked-waters.
Not looking like the best weekend but plenty of other times to target trout. Largemouth bass are always one of my target species this time of year. Pre-spawn fish can be eager to put on some weight.
So what's the word... when are the fish going to be here... how's the Breachway..
Fresh fish are not here yet but could start showing up within the next couple weeks. We had a strong start last spring with good size fish hanging around the inlets, we are hoping for the same this year. Bait is being seen in the salt ponds as well as coves within Narragansett Bay. Herring are doing their thing making there way to freshwater ponds. Holdovers continue to chase them. The Breachway repair job on the east each side has held up well throughout the winter. East Beach looks very similar to how it looked before it breached. The Breachway itself is now averaging 4-5 feet at low. The water now does an S curve past Elbow beach with that channel now reaching 5-6 feet. It has been steadily improving. We will continue to adapt to new fishing strategies and navigation.
