Pick your poison neon moon or bass moon. It's been a spectacular week of fishing here in southern Rhode Island! The new moon definitely lived up to expectations, pushing a significant amount of bait and fish into the area.
We've seen impressive numbers of hungry striped bass, including a good showing of larger fish. The primary bait along the shore has been bay anchovies, but there are also reports of plenty of sand eels around the island. Other bait currently present in our area includes squid, silversides, eels, shrimp, mummies, needlefish, shad, bunker, and more.
Bass and bluefish have been actively blitzing in various locations along the south shore throughout the week. We're hoping these fish stick around a bit longer before settling into their usual spots.
Fluke fishing reports are improving, with larger fish starting to appear. Seabass continue to be plentiful, although most are still in deeper waters. Tautog reports have been positive, with only a few days left in their season. Many smaller tautog have been caught locally.
Squid fishing remains good but is expected to slow down as their spawning season nears its end. We're getting some good reports recently that the worm hatch has re surfaced so don't count that out either.
