With Father's Day approaching, we often reflect on what fishing truly means. It brings back memories of learning the basics and highlights the real essence of it all: shared moments, experiences, and stories created with loved ones that we cherish forever. It's about stepping away from our routines and embracing the uncertainty and adventure of a day on the water.
While we aim to be a valuable part of your fishing resources, we hope our report offers some useful insights.
The calmer seas earlier this week were a welcome change. Hopefully, some of you managed to get out today, as it seems Saturday's tougher conditions might be returning.
Fishing remains productive, with the fluke bite showing a noticeable improvement. We've seen both good quantities and larger sizes appearing this week, primarily in the 37-47 ft range locally. A consistent number of healthy seabass are being caught, and encouragingly, dogfish numbers have been lower. There are reports of larger gulp and bait presentations being effective for the larger fluke. Scup reports are still slow with mostly very small or some really big ones around.
Bait continues to be abundant in the salt ponds this week, with striped killifish being particularly noteworthy. While sandeel numbers seem to have decreased locally, they are still present. Bass are being caught on both incoming and outgoing tides, with a variety of sizes reported. Bluefish are still being spotted along the coast.
Around the island, bass fishing is picking up, with bird activity observed at sunrise and on numerous bait schools throughout the day. Fluke are being found in deeper waters on the south side, and schools of mackerel are frequently seen moving to and from the island.
Finally, is anyone else excited about the prospect of tuna fishing? On Tuesday, while returning to the Breachway, I encountered a pod of at least 100 porpoises just a short distance from it. It definitely got me thinking about the tuna grounds and the thrilling sound of a singing drag!
