We often hear tales of the "big one" that got away or the thrill of a monumental catch. This fascination with large fish is understandable; who wouldn't prefer a bigger catch? Yet, it's interesting to consider why we place such a high value on them.
Several factors stand out:
The Challenge: Landing a large fish demands greater skill, more time, and considerable patience. Sometimes, a bit of luck plays a role too!
Rarity: Catching a fluke over 10 lbs., for example, is a rare event. Word of such a caliber of fish spreading quickly among local anglers.
Comparison: Anglers enjoy comparing their catches "Weirdos", and a large fish can impress even those new to the sport.
Now, for the fishing scene: we've had some fantastic days on the water this week, with excellent ocean conditions allowing everyone a great opportunity to get out and fish.
Fluke: We've seen a big jump in reports of keepers this week, with a few notable catches. Most of the fish are coming from 37-47 feet locally, though some larger ones have been caught in 15-20 feet of water. The Block Island bite continues to be good, but it's similar to the action closer to shore, so many boats are saving gas and staying local.
Bass: The bass bite has been excellent this week! Many fish are being spotted around the Island, feeding on various baits like mackerel, sand eels, scup, and flounder. Our local population of large fish is currently in its prime. The cold water is also making it easier to ensure a healthy release for these fish. As the water warms, it will be even more crucial to land and release them quickly.
Salt Ponds: The salt ponds are producing good numbers of schoolies, mostly feeding on sand eels. You can catch these fish on topwater lures, soft plastics, and Alabama rigs that mimic the bait schools. Bigger fish have been happy to take live eels at night. There are also some reports of fluke being caught in the pond, mostly shorts with a few keepers.
Seabass: The seabass bite out front has been good. While there are a lot of smaller fish, using larger presentations will help you weed them out and find bigger ones. This includes artificial's and bait.
