A potluck is a wonderful communal gathering where everyone brings a dish to share, creating a diverse and enjoyable meal. It's a fantastic way to share food and company, and to truly appreciate the incredible resources we have. Imagine trying Becky's chowder, Tom's stuffies, and Dave's ceviche all in one night\! This time of year, there's so much seafood available.
For some, "potluck" might even mean pulling up a lobster pot to find dozens of mahi circling below, or setting your first lobster pot and catching six keepers on your first haul!
While some say the "dog days" of fishing are here, with warm waters and fishing slowing down, I prefer to look at the glass half full and focus on what's next and what's happening right now that's truly great. Tautog opens today and it is nice to finally get a break from the humidity. We've seen an uptick of people getting into bonito. some coming from the Breachway, boat and west wall.
The pond has seen the most bait this summer in the past few days, with peanut bunker, silversides, killifish, snapper blues, and bay anchovies abundant and growing in size. The pond has been fishing pretty well for stripers and fluke. We've seen an increase in eelgrass floating around, fishing earlier in the tide seems to be a good way to avoid it.
Here's a breakdown by species:
* **Fluke:** Some notable fishing done this past week around block. Sometimes we get a good mid august pickup on the fluke bite.
* **Seabass:** More larger ones continue to fill in and as customers venture out for tautog they will be happy to steal some crab.
* **Bass:** Fishing has slowed a little but still plenty of fish around if you work at them and learn there patterns. Still taking eels and when you can find tinker mackerel they seem to be preferred.
* **Bluefish:** Reports of bigger waves of bluefish coming by along the south shore. Sometimes being chased by large tuna this time of year.
* **Tuna:** Reports are pretty consistent and it looks like the ocean is going to lay down next week again.
