There has been significant fishing activity this past week as bait and fish prepare for the changing seasons. We're seeing "blitz dreaming" become a reality, with massive schools of bait attracting boiling predators. Stripers, bluefish, bonito, and false albacore have been observed crashing bait along the south shore, in the inlets, and around Block Island.
**Striped Bass**
The striped bass bite has been excellent in the salt pond this week, with fish present almost everywhere, from the channel to the back coves and around the breachway. It appears there are more bass in the ponds than offshore, likely due to the abundance and size of the bait. Mullet, massive schools of rain bait, and peanut bunker have recently appeared. Shad have also shown up in good numbers, feeding on the rain bait.
**Fluke**
The fluke bite seems to have slowed down. This could be due to fewer reports as they are not being targeted as frequently. Bait has moved closer to the beaches over the past couple of days due to the south wind, which may draw some fluke back into approximately 30 feet of water. A customer recently caught a weakfish on a fluke rig, and it would be great to see more of them caught this fall.
**Bluefish**
Bluefish #'s are picking up. Snappers have been actively blitzing peanut bunker in the pond, while cocktail bluefish are being caught offshore. Gator bluefish are being found around Block Island, with occasional catches from the rocks.
**Bonito**
We are seeing an increasing number of bonito. Yesterday's false albacore reports were the most positive I've heard so far, with some coming from around the west wall and others near the North Rip.
**Sea Bass & Tautog**
With so much bait around, we've observed sea bass coming to the surface to chase it. The tautog bite has been very good; the water has cleared up in the shallows, which seems to be improving the bite.
