It's wonderful to finally experience some summer weather! The fishing here in Rhode Island continues to improve. Water clarity locally has improved greatly in the past few days.
More and more boats are heading out for fluke. While reports vary, many anglers are catching smaller fish in the 14-16" range, with an occasional keeper over 19". Locally, the bite still seems to be best between 31-37 feet, with Block Island yielding larger fish. We can expect more fluke to migrate into our waters, though it's worth noting that the water has taken a bit longer to warm up this year.
Black sea bass numbers continue to increase and they are readily biting on fluke rigs. Some larger ones will also eagerly strike at a live eel if given the chance. Please remember that tautog season is closed until August 1st. Slow rolling a swimbait over a rockpile or jigging various metals/Epoxy's over rockpiles continue to be a favorite target method.
Sand eels have appeared in significant numbers this week, from Block Island along the south shore, particularly near East Beach and Watch Hill. Some smaller ones have also moved into the salt ponds, especially on the incoming tide.
Bass, Blues, Fluke. and Seabass have this bait fish on their mind. Bluefish are still around but not as prevalent as earlier this spring. Bass local number continues to increase with some fish beginning to settle into there summer areas. This week we continued to have a few worm hatches in Ninigret. We are expecting a few more decent hatches before it comes to an end for the year.
