It's hard to believe we're already halfway through summer! I still have so many outings on my mind: fishing a specific rock pile on an ebb tide, making a run to the tuna grounds, going shark fishing, and dragging eels through the salt ponds at night. What's a trip you've been thinking about? Now's the perfect time to find a window and get out there!
Here's what's been happening out on the water:
* **Fluke:** Reports were a bit better this week, with more keepers being brought in, though there are still a lot of shorts. Look for them in deeper water around 50' locally and 70' around Block Island. The fluke bite remains consistent in the salt pond.
* **Seabass:** We've seen bigger ones getting caught this week, with noticeable knots on their heads. A few customers have even landed them while targeting stripers. They seem happy to suck down a whole live eel.
* **Bass:** They've still been around in pretty good numbers, though they've been tougher to entice locally. Live scup or mackerel has been the key. The salt ponds are warming up, and the fish are starting to prefer feeding on the incoming tide. There are plenty of silversides, bay anchovies, and sand eels around. We've also just seen the first good-sized schools of peanut bunker in the backwater, along with very small snapper blues.
* **Bluefish:** There are still a few around, especially near Block Island. We used to see more come into the salt ponds, but it seems most are staying out front this year.
* **Tuna:** Reports are still good, with fish scattered in multiple areas. Trolling still seems to be the most effective method, but there's an increasing bite from jigging and casting. There's a lot of life out there, and the mammals have been active.
