Fishing Report July 25th, Half Bass

We've been seeing a lot of "half bass" lately, and I'm not fulling around! The warm water means sharks are around, and many anglers this week have reeled in bass only to find half the fish gone. If this happens to you, I suggest moving to a new spot, as they'll likely return.

In the salt ponds, a good amount of bait—including silversides, bunker, and mummies—are gaining size. The ponds have been fishing really well on some days, but can seem almost lifeless on others.

The scup bite off the breachways has been excellent, with some dinner-plate-sized ones being pulled in!

Here's a breakdown by species:

* **Fluke:** It's great to see the ponds loaded with juvenile fluke, which bodes well for future populations! Local fluke reports seemed to slow down this week. Calm water and good clarity, combined with not-so-great drifts, likely played a big role. However, the island showed some improvements.

* **Seabass:** We're seeing more large seabass moving in, making for great table fare. Smaller ones are still covering the shallow rock piles, but more consistent big ones have been found in deeper water.

* **Bass:** The bass are hunkering down and concentrating their feeding in the mornings and evenings. Live bait still seems to be key, and trolling sand eel umbrellas out front also appears to be working.

* **Bluefish:** There are still a few blues in the mix, primarily around the island and just inside the tuna grounds.

* **Tuna:** Tuna reports are still good, though there's been a little less action than last week. Anglers are having to cover a bit more ground to find fish. Don't lose hope—your tuna trip can turn around in minutes; sometimes you just stumble into the bite you've been looking for all day. Mahi seem to be filling in on the high flyers and debris. We're hoping to start seeing some yellowfins as warmer water pushes in.
