Seas are looking promising for this weekend to get out and chase some funy fish. Let's not just do a toss-up and fear an interception. Let's make sure we are prepared and scan the playing field before making our departure.

Striped Bass

Shore fishing is heating up, and the bass have been taking advantage of all the bait leaving their summer grounds. Guys on the jetties are having productive trips, while the beaches have still been pretty quiet. Those blitzes should start happening once the colder weather sets in.

Eels have been one of the top producers for bigger fish, especially inside the breachways at the beginning and end of the tides when the water is moving slower. Some really nice fish over 45 inches have been landed.

Plugs on the outside and bucktails on the inside have been better producers when the current picks up.

Tuna

The crowds are becoming smaller, and the bite should hold well for the next couple of weeks. Mahi have flooded the area and can be found around the turbines, especially on the shaded side, as well as around high flyers.

Fluke

The bite has been hit or miss for guys fishing locally and around Block Island. A notable catch this week was a 26-inch fluke caught in Ninigret Pond.

There are still quality fish around if you get lucky or put the time in.

Sea bass have been more consistent, with fish chasing bait. It is not uncommon to catch them close to the surface this time of year when they are chasing bait. Large swimbaits like the Joe Baggs Miracle Minnow can be a good option to weed out some of the smaller ones.

Tautog

The bite has been pretty consistent. I have not heard of many larger fish being pulled in, but I would assume they are still out in deeper water.

Mostly shorts and a handful of keepers are being caught. The bycatch will slowly dissipate as the water begins to cool, but we still have a ways to go.

Fishing 40-20 feet of water will give you a good chance of getting some fish in the boat.

Bonito / False Albacore

Bonito reports are still coming in, but it seems like the masses have shifted and the albies are taking over.

It looks like the albie fishing is off to a great start. Many good-sized fish have hit our waters along the South Shore. It seems like they started showing consistently around Block Island at the beginning of the week and have slowly pushed in.

Keep in mind that the bite locally seems to have been better when the breachways are pumping water out.

Guys from the beaches and rocks have seem to been having o shot at both albies and bones.

Lure of the Week – Fish Snax XL

False Albacore World Record

The official all-tackle world record for false albacore, also known as little tunny, is 36 pounds. The fish was caught by angler Jess Lubert on November 4, 2006, off the coast of New Jersey.

That is a serious false albacore, especially when you compare it to the 10-12 pound fish we normally see around here.

Most of us are pretty happy with a 10-pound albie screaming off 100 yards of line, so a 36-pound fish is hard to imagine.
